WAEPA Increases Maximum Group Term Life Insurance Coverage to $2 Million
This new coverage limit reflects WAEPA’s continued commitment to serving Federal employees and their families, helping protect income and long-term financial obligations.
Falls Church, Va. (August 31, 2026) — WAEPA (Worldwide Assurance for Employees of Public Agencies, Inc.) is proud to announce that eligible current and former Civilian Federal Employees may now apply for up to $2 million in Group Term Life Insurance coverage, the highest coverage amount available in the association’s history.
Since WAEPA was founded in 1943, the association has continued to evolve its coverage offerings to help meet the changing financial needs of Federal employees and their families. At its founding, members could apply for up to $10,000 in Group Term Life Insurance coverage—equivalent to nearly $200,000 in today’s purchasing power.
The new $2 million maximum marks the fifth expansion of WAEPA’s coverage limit in the association’s history, providing greater flexibility for Feds to choose a level of protection that aligns with their financial goals and responsibilities.
Most recently, in 2017, WAEPA increased its maximum Group Term Life Insurance coverage from $750,000 to $1.5 million. The new $2 million maximum provides eligible members with even greater opportunity to choose the amount of protection that best fits their financial goals and responsibilities.
“For more than 80 years, WAEPA has evolved alongside the changing needs of the federal community,” said M. Shane Canfield, CEO of WAEPA. “Increasing our maximum Group Term Life Insurance coverage to $2 million provides eligible members greater flexibility to choose the level of protection that’s right for them and their families. It’s another example of our commitment to continually enhancing our products and services to better serve our members today and for generations to come.”
Why Is WAEPA Increasing Its Maximum Coverage?
Financial needs evolve over time. Whether it’s buying a home, growing a family, preparing for retirement, or adapting to broader economic changes, the amount of life insurance that’s appropriate for one stage of life may not be enough for the next.
Over the last eight decades, WAEPA has remained committed to responsible stewardship and long-term financial strength. This coverage expansion reflects that continued commitment, giving eligible members access to higher levels of protection backed by an organization that has served Federal employees and their families for more than 80 years.
The expansion also reinforces WAEPA’s mission of helping members protect the people and financial commitments that matter most.
Who Is Eligible for Up to $2 Million in Coverage?
Eligible current and former Civilian Federal Employees, as well as eligible Associate Members, may apply for up to $2 million in Group Term Life Insurance, subject to age, underwriting, and other eligibility requirements.
Current members—including those who already have $1.5 million in Group Term Life Insurance coverage—may also apply to increase their coverage, subject to underwriting and eligibility guidelines.
