WAEPA vs. FEGLI: How do they stack up?

As a Fed looking for life insurance coverage, the two primary options you’ll encounter are WAEPA and FEGLI, each unique in both structure and offerings. While WAEPA can often provide cost savings and more member benefits, it’s important to understand both programs to make the right choice for you and your family.

Understanding Eligibility and Coverage

Can I keep coverage after Federal service?

Since WAEPA is a nonprofit association separate from the federal government, our members are covered even after leaving federal service, as long as they pay their premiums when due.

As for FEGLI, you must remain insured with FEGLI for five consecutive years prior to retirement to continue coverage. If you simply leave your federal position, your FEGLI insurance will end.

How much coverage is provided?

Eligible WAEPA and Associate members qualify for up to $1.5 million in Group Term Life Insurance. Dependent spouses are eligible for up to $500,000 in coverage, and dependent children can receive up to $25,000 in coverage.

FEGLI’s coverage amount varies based on your Federal salary and is capped at 5x your salary. Dependent spouses are eligible for up to $25,000 in coverage.

Double Life Insurance Coverage

Both WAEPA and FEGLI offer coverage to Civilian Federal Employees. Most Feds are eligible for both programs — and you can even hold coverage from both simultaneously if you choose.
