Relief and Resources for Federal Workers During Government Shutdown

As of November 5, 2025, the Federal government shutdown entered its 36th day, marking the longest shutdown in U.S. history.

Roughly 670,000 Federal employees have been furloughed, with around 730,000 Feds working without pay.

WAEPA understands that this prolonged uncertainty is challenging for our members and the entire Federal community. Below are verified resources for financial assistance, food support, and community programs to help you and your family during this time.

Federal shutdown resources for Federal workers

Unemployment Compensation

Also called unemployment insurance, this program provides compensation to former Federal employees who lost employment through no fault of their own.

Feds should apply for benefits in the jurisdiction of their “duty station,” meaning if you are a Marylander who works at a job based in Virginia, you would apply in Virginia.

Financial Assistance for Federal Workers

A range of organizations and programs are offering financial support to help bridge the gap during the shutdown:

Food Assistance Programs

No one should go without essentials due to a shutdown.

In the D.C. area, the Capital Area Food Bank has expanded its food distributions to help Federal workers throughout the DMV.

Visitors can receive food by showing a government work ID.

Free Food, Deals, and Specials for Federal Workers

DMV-area restaurants, museums, and more are offering discounts and deals to Federal workers during the ongoing shutdown.
