Frequently Asked Questions

Why apply for an Associate Membership?

Associate Membership allows eligible family members of current and former Civilian Federal Employees to apply for up to $1.5 million in Group Term Life Insurance coverage of their own. Eligible Associate members may also apply for WAEPA’s Group Short-Term Disability Insurance and enjoy access to exclusive member benefits.

Can I be covered as a dependent instead?

Eligible spouses and children may qualify for dependent coverage under a WAEPA Member’s policy. Parents and parents-in-law are not eligible for dependent coverage but may apply for their own coverage through Associate Membership.

How much coverage is available?

Eligible Associate members may apply for up to $1.5 million in Group Term Life Insurance coverage.

Dependent coverage is available only for eligible spouses and children, up to $500,000 for spouses, and $25,000 for children.

What happens to my existing dependent coverage?

A person cannot be insured under more than one policy with WAEPA at any given time. If you apply for Associate Membership, any existing dependent coverage you may have will end.

Can I be denied coverage?

Yes, you can be denied coverage, depending on underwriting requirements. If you are currently insured as a dependent and apply for more coverage than you currently have, your application could be declined. If that happens, you’ll remain insured under your existing dependent coverage, provided you remain eligible for it.

Who is eligible for Associate Membership?

Eligible Associate members include spouses, adult children, stepchildren, parents, and parents-in-law of current and former Civilian Federal Employees. Additional eligibility requirements and underwriting guidelines apply.
