Relief and Resources for Federal Workers During Government Shutdown
Federal Civilian LifeAs of November 5, 2025, the Federal government shutdown entered its 36th day, marking the longest shutdown in U.S. history.
Roughly 670,000 Federal employees have been furloughed, with around 730,000 Feds working without pay.
WAEPA understands that this prolonged uncertainty is challenging for our members and the entire Federal community. Below are verified resources for financial assistance, food support, and community programs to help you and your family during this time.
Unemployment Compensation
Also called unemployment insurance, this program provides compensation to former Federal employees who lost employment through no fault of their own.
Feds should apply for benefits in the jurisdiction of their “duty station,” meaning if you are a Marylander who works at a job based in Virginia, you would apply in Virginia.
Financial Assistance for Federal Workers
A range of organizations and programs are offering financial support to help bridge the gap during the shutdown:
- Credit unions offering low-interest or zero-interest loans to Federal employees affected, including USAA, Navy Federal, and PenFed
- The Federal Employee Education & Assistance Fund (FEEA) offers both an Emergency Hardship Loan program and Shutdown Grants program.
- Pepco, the majority electric company in the DMV, is offering payment plans to help Federal workers pay their bills.
Other Support for Federal Workers
- In Virginia, state law protects Federal employees and contractors from being evicted or foreclosed on during a government shutdown.
- Fairfax County (VA) has extended its deadline for residents to pay their personal property tax (car tax).
- The city of Alexandria (VA) is offering short-term relief resources for residents and businesses
- Federal workers are able to ride the MARC and Maryland Commuter Bus for free by showing a Federal ID badge.
- Maryland’s Federal Shutdown Loan Program opened on October 6, offering a $700 no-interest loan to impacted “excepted” employees.
- Maryland’s Federal Worker Emergency Loan Program also offers a $700 no-interest loan to employees who were laid off.
Food Assistance Programs
No one should go without essentials due to a shutdown.
In the D.C. area, the Capital Area Food Bank has expanded its food distributions to help Federal workers throughout the DMV.
Visitors can receive food by showing a government work ID.
